Save Animals through Rescue and Adoption Society

The S.A.R.A. is a no-kill shelter located in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. A non-profit organization and completely run by dedicated volunteers, SARA's mission is to provide homeless, abandoned and surrendered animals a second chance in life by helping them find suitable and loving homes. SARA's strict no-kill policy provides a refuge for unwanted pets while saving as many as possible from unnecessary euthanasia.

The society was founded in 1998. Over the years, the shelter has grown to house over 120 cats, and a number of dogs, rabbits and birds. Many find wonderful and loving homes through our adoption program, but SARA also provides permanent housing for non-adoptable animals due to age, medical or behavioral problems. We also place many of our animals in our foster care program throughout the community.

Delta Community Animal Shelter

Delta Community Animal Shelter (DCAS) is a branch of the Property Use and Compliance Division of The Corporation of Delta and meets approximately 800 animals each year. Some of these animals are brought in by their owners because they can no longer care for them, some are found roaming and are unable to find their way home, and others are rescued by caring people who see an animal in need.

Whatever the reason they come to the shelter, DCAS is here to provide a safe temporary home that offers medical and emotional support. DCAS is proud of the care and rehabilitation we are able to provide to animals in the shelter. However, our community's support is vital (through volunteers, monetary donations, providing services, and more) in ensuring the most needy of animals get the help they require.

Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary

Greyhaven is a non-profit society specializing in parrot rescue, refuge and adoptions whose purpose is to enhance the quality of life for companion birds through rehabilitation, compassion and the education of the general public in the care of exotic birds.

So much of what we do revolves around our generous foster homes and our sanctuary location. We also provide various programs to the public, such as Education Outreach and Pet Therapy.

No member of Greyhaven receives monetary remuneration, including the Board of Directors. Our facility is solely operated by volunteers who generously devote their valuable time to the well-being of the birds that are under the care and protection of Greyhaven. We are strongly committed to the welfare of our birds and dedicate each and every day to providing the highest level of care.

Richmond Animal Protection Society

Richmond Animal Protection Society (RAPS) is a registered charity that operates two shelters in Richmond, British Columbia. Our first shelter, on No. 6 Road in Richmond, is North America's largest cat sanctuary. Our second shelter is the City of Richmond Animal Shelter, which we have operated since February 2007.

The Reptile Guy

It all started when The Reptile Guy (Mike Hopcraft) received a green anole for his birthday when he was in grade 5. The collection was slow to start but once he graduated and lived on his own, Mike shared his home with dozens of rescued, surrendered and a few purchased reptiles. He had originally planned to breed and sell reptiles and eventually open up a pet store with a friend but that changed after he realized that there was more of a need for a rescue and education center than another breeder. For almost 15 years now, Mike has been saving countless reptiles, amphibians and arachnids from a number of situations. Not all of them are rescues as many people come into circumstances in which they cannot prevent and have to give up their pets. Mike has taken in everything from small frogs and scorpions to caiman, alligators and even a lemur! The Reptile Guy set up a 2000 square foot facility in Abbotsford to house over 100 rescued/surrendered reptiles including a 200lb python and 7 1/2 foot alligator and funded it with money raised by private tours of the facility as well as funds raised from educational presentations which originally began in 2000. Unfortunately, in 2011, he was forced to shut down his facility and part with most of his animals after new laws prohibiting the display and ownership of certain reptiles were put in to place in British Columbia. Mike has not given up his goal to open up a large rescue and education center. His education program is back up and running and hopefully, in time, will be able to fund such a project! By the year 2006 Mike had done presentations at almost every school in the south Okanagan and a few shows in the central and north Okanagan, countless birthday parties, daycares, after school programs, youth groups, scouts, cubs, girl guides, Peach Festival, The Lazy Lizard Children's Festival and the list goes on. Mike even got a call from a Women's group wanting him to do a show for one of their meetings! He had also been in almost every newspaper in the area, being on the news a few times and had one of our snakes filmed for a movie.
